During the last couple of years Uppsala municipality has spent 15 million SEK, 2,5 million USD, to build a fish ladder in the small river of FyrisÃ¥n, running through the center of Uppsala. Due to interferences into the river in the centre of Uppsala over centuries when building bridges, terraces and so on, the asp has for 170 years been unable to swim upriver to spawn, and therefore the number of fish has decreased rapidly. The Asp is an official marker of Uppsala County, but has hardly been seen at all for a century. It never was commercially important, and Carl von Linné claimed it had bad taste.
